Mark Karlson

Managing Director, Healthcare, Marsh

Mark Karlson is a managing director of Marsh and is the National Practice Leader of our HealthCare Industry Practice.  During his 31 years at Marsh, Mark has worked as the HealthCare National Practice Leader for FINPRO, as a regional FINPRO manager, as a broker, and as a client executive. His expertise includes all forms of HealthCare related insurance products. In 2008, Mark was named the HealthCare National Practice Leader for FINPRO; in 2016 he was named as the HealthCare National Practice Leader.

In his role as National HealthCare Industry Practice Leader, Mark is responsible for the national delivery of HealthCare knowledge and expertise to Marsh clients in this dynamic industry. He is responsible for overseeing the entire national HealthCare Practice including providing clients with advice regarding risk exposures, emerging trends, insurance markets, and insurance placements. Mark also continues to lead client brokerage activities for large Healthcare accounts.

Mark has extensive experience helping clients tailor their risk transfer programs based on their specific risk characteristics and objectives. Mark has worked with many large managed care companies, as well as hospitals and other providers, and has helped managed care clients tailor their coverage to match the evolution of risk within the various managed care business models. Mark’s expertise includes the use of the US domestic, London, and Bermuda risk transfer markets, the use of captives, the use of self-assumed layers within large program structures, large class action and single plaintiff claims, loss control efforts, and manuscripting policies.

Mark joined Marsh in 1989. Mark holds a joint Bachelor of Arts degree in religion and American history from Williams College.
